Eyelid Surgery in London

For patients considering blepharoplasty in London, the experience and specialism of the surgical team is the most important factor in achieving a natural, well-proportioned result. Eyelid surgery is one of the most technically precise procedures in facial surgery. The margins for error are small and the aesthetic stakes are high, making the choice of surgeon and facility critical.

At 101 Harley Street, blepharoplasty is performed by consultant plastic and oculoplastic surgeons with specialist expertise in surgery of the eye area. Oculoplastic surgeons train specifically in the structures surrounding the eye, giving them a depth of anatomical knowledge that is particularly relevant to eyelid procedures. Every patient is assessed and operated on by a named consultant, and your care is overseen by that same clinician throughout your journey.

Our Marylebone clinic is located within London’s most established medical district, and our newly renovated day-surgery facility is equipped to the standard required for delicate procedures performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic. Patients travel to us from across London, the UK, and internationally for eyelid surgery, and our 5.0 Google rating reflects the consistency of results and care our patients experience.

If you are looking for eyelid surgery in London and would like to understand what blepharoplasty can achieve for your specific concerns, the first step is a consultation with one of our specialists.

What is a Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that targets sagging eyelids and under-eye bags. As we age, over time the skin around the eyes can lose elasticity, leading to drooping, puffiness, or a heavy, tired appearance. In some some cases this can even lead to impaired vision. By removing or repositioning excess fat and tightening the skin and muscles, blepharoplasty restores smoother contours and a refreshed look.

There are two main types of Bleph at our Harley Street clinic:

  • Upper Blepharoplasty: Focuses on lifting sagging upper eyelids to improve eye shape and definition.

  • Lower Blepharoplasty: Reduces puffiness and under-eye bags, tightening the skin for a smoother, rested appearance.

Many patients choose to combine both procedures for full rejuvenation of the eye area.

Doctor Dan Wright is not only one of the kindest and nicest human beings you could ever meet he’s one of the most professional. At every stage of my procedure I felt reassured and in very safe hands. I would not normally post a review of anything that isn’t a restaurant or a barber but I felt compelled to here because my experience was so wonderful. Fantastic stuff. Brilliant.

How Does Blepharoplasty Work?

Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on your treatment plan. During the procedure, your surgeon makes discreet incisions along the natural eyelid creases to minimise visible scarring. Through these incisions, excess skin, fat, or muscle is carefully removed or repositioned to achieve a natural, refreshed result.

Typical treatment duration is 60 – 120 minutes, and most patients can return home the same day. Swelling and mild bruising are common for the first week, with results becoming progressively clearer over the following months.

Many patients present with a combination of concerns across both areas, and combining upper and lower blepharoplasty in a single procedure is common.

Your Journey With 101
What is blepharoplasty and what can it correct?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that removes or repositions excess skin, fat, and tissue around the eyes to create a more refreshed and youthful appearance. At 101 Harley Street, it can correct heavy or hooded upper eyelids, under-eye bags and puffiness, loose or crepey lower eyelid skin, and in some cases upper eyelid skin that has drooped sufficiently to affect vision. The procedure can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

How long does blepharoplasty take and will I need a general anaesthetic?

Blepharoplasty at 101 Harley Street typically takes between 1 and 2 hours. The procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic, depending on your treatment plan and personal preference. This will be discussed and agreed at your pre-operative consultation. It is carried out as a day case, meaning you go home the same day.

What is recovery like after eyelid surgery?

Most patients take around one week off work following blepharoplasty. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around the eyes are normal in the first 7 to 10 days and will settle gradually. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal activities after 7 to 10 days, with results becoming progressively clearer over the following weeks. Initial improvement is visible at around 2 weeks, with final results apparent at 3 to 6 months as residual swelling fully resolves and the eyelid contours settle.

Will blepharoplasty leave visible scars?

Blepharoplasty incisions are placed within the natural creases and contours of the eyelids to minimise visible scarring. For upper blepharoplasty, the incision sits within the upper eyelid crease and is well concealed when the eye is open. For lower blepharoplasty, the incision is placed just beneath the lower lash line or, in some cases, inside the lower lid with no external cut at all. In the majority of patients, any visible scarring becomes very difficult to detect within several months of surgery.

Is blepharoplasty suitable for both men and women?

Yes. Blepharoplasty is performed on both male and female patients at 101 Harley Street. While the goals are often similar, the surgical planning takes into account the natural differences between male and female eyelid anatomy. Male patients typically have a heavier brow and a different upper eyelid crease position, and these factors are considered carefully during surgical planning to ensure results look natural and appropriate to the individual patient’s features.

How much does blepharoplasty cost on Harley Street?

Costs for blepharoplasty in London vary depending on whether upper, lower, or combined surgery is performed. At 101 Harley Street, your surgeon will provide a personalised quotation following consultation.

What’s the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty targets drooping eyelids that can affect eye shape or vision, while lower blepharoplasty removes puffiness and eye bags under the eyes.

How long does blepharoplasty last?

Results typically last between 5–10 years, although longevity depends on factors such as skin quality, genetics, and lifestyle.

When can I sleep on my side after blepharoplasty?

Most patients can resume side sleeping after 10-14 days, once swelling has reduced and healing is stable.

How to get rid of eye bags without surgery?

Non-surgical options such as dermal fillers, laser skin tightening, and radiofrequency treatments can temporarily reduce under-eye bags. However, for permanent correction, lower blepharoplasty offers the most effective long-term solution. For non-surgical options, our L’Atelier Aesthetics skin care centre, can take care of all your needs, which is also based 101 Harley street can take care of all your needs.

Is blepharoplasty performed under local or general anaesthetic?

Both are available at our Harley Street clinic. Most Blepharoplasty treatments are handled under local anaesthetic. Especially for minor upper eyelid procedures, they can often be done under local anaesthetic, while combined or complex cases may require general anaesthetic.

How long does recovery take?

Most patients return to normal activities within 7-10 days, though final results can take a few months as swelling subsides.

Are there scars after blepharoplasty?

Incisions are carefully placed within the natural eyelid folds, so any scarring is minimal and typically fades within a few months.
