Doctor Dan Wright is not only one of the kindest and nicest human beings you could ever meet he’s one of the most professional. At every stage of my procedure I felt reassured and in very safe hands. I would not normally post a review of anything that isn’t a restaurant or a barber but I felt compelled to here because my experience was so wonderful. Fantastic stuff. Brilliant.

Neck Lift Frequently Asked Questions

It is common to have questions about a surgical procedure. Some key questions here that we receive from patients considering a neck lift.

Your Journey With 101
What is a neck lift and what can it correct?

A neck lift, also known as a platysmaplasty or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that tightens the underlying neck muscles, removes excess skin, and refines the contours of the jawline and neck to restore a smoother, firmer, and more youthful profile. At 101 Harley Street, it can correct loose or sagging skin beneath the jawline, vertical neck banding caused by platysma muscle laxity, excess fat or fullness under the chin, and loss of definition between the neck and jawline. Each procedure is planned individually to complement the patient’s facial features and produce a natural, balanced result.

What is the difference between a neck lift and a facelift?

A neck lift focuses specifically on the jawline and neck, addressing laxity, banding, and excess skin in the lower face and neck without addressing the mid-face or cheeks. A facelift addresses a broader area, typically including the mid-face, jowls, and neck, producing more comprehensive rejuvenation of the lower two thirds of the face. Some patients benefit from a combined neck lift and facelift procedure where concerns extend across both areas. Your surgeon at 101 Harley Street will assess your anatomy and recommend the right scope of surgery for your goals at consultation.

How long does recovery from a neck lift take?

Most patients take 1 to 2 weeks off work following a neck lift at 101 Harley Street. Swelling, bruising, and tightness around the neck and jawline are normal in the first 1 to 2 weeks and settle gradually. A compression garment is worn around the neck during the initial recovery period to support healing and help the skin conform to its new contour. Most patients return to normal activities at 2 to 3 weeks, with noticeable improvement visible from this point as swelling resolves. Final results are apparent at 3 to 6 months. Full recovery is typically reached at 6 to 8 weeks.

Will a neck lift leave visible scars?

Neck lift incisions are placed discreetly around the ear and, in some cases, with a small additional incision beneath the chin. These placements mean the scars sit in natural skin creases and behind the ear where they are well concealed. In the majority of patients, scarring becomes very difficult to detect within several months of surgery as healing progresses. Your surgeon at 101 Harley Street will discuss incision placement and what to expect at each stage of healing at your pre-operative consultation.

How long do the results of a neck lift last?

A neck lift produces long-lasting results. The tightened platysma muscle and repositioned skin maintain their improved position, and the structural change achieved through surgery is lasting. Natural ageing will continue after surgery, but from a more youthful baseline. Most patients enjoy their results for many years. Factors including skin quality, sun exposure, lifestyle, and genetics all influence how results age over time. Maintaining a stable weight following surgery is also beneficial for preserving long-term neck contour.

Will I have visible scars?

Incisions are discreetly placed behind the ears and, where necessary, beneath the chin. Once healed, they are usually very well concealed.

Is a neck lift painful?

Mild discomfort or tightness is normal in the first few days, but this is easily managed with prescribed pain relief. Most patients describe recovery as comfortable.

When will I see results?

You will notice an improvement after swelling subsides — usually within two to three weeks — with final refinement over three to six months.

How long will results last?

Neck lift results are long-lasting. While the natural ageing process continues, patients typically enjoy results that last 10 years or more, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle and good skincare.

Can a neck lift be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Many patients choose to combine a neck lift with a facelift, chin liposuction, or non-surgical skin tightening treatments for enhanced results.

Your surgeon will discuss all suitable options during your consultation.

All procedures at 101 Harley Street are carried out by highly qualified consultants and specialists who are leaders in their respective fields. Each practitioner has extensive experience within both the NHS and private practice and is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). You can explore our consultants here.

Can I choose which consultant I see?

Will I see the same consultant throughout my treatment?

Yes. You will meet your consultant during your initial consultation, and they will oversee your treatment plan and aftercare to ensure consistency, safety, and the highest standard of results.

Our Neck Lift Surgeons

Neck lift surgery at 101 Harley Street is performed by consultant surgeons with specialist expertise in facial and neck rejuvenation. Every surgeon practising at 101 Harley Street holds a substantive NHS consultant post or equivalent senior position and is registered with the General Medical Council. All are Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons who have completed specialist training in plastic or oculoplastic surgery.

This matters for neck lift patients in particular. The neck is a structurally complex area involving the platysma muscle, underlying fat compartments, and the delicate structures of the lower face. Achieving a result that looks natural and remains stable over time requires a surgeon who understands both the anatomy and the aesthetic principles of lower face and neck rejuvenation.

At 101 Harley Street, you will always be seen, assessed, and operated on by the consultant you met at your initial consultation. There are no junior teams performing procedures on behalf of a senior surgeon. Consultant-led care, from your first appointment through to post-operative recovery, is a fundamental part of how we work.
