What Are Pectoral Implants?

Pectoral implants are silicone devices designed to enhance the projection, contour and symmetry of the male chest. Unlike breast implants, which are used in female augmentation, pectoral implants are firmer and shaped to replicate the natural definition of the pectoralis major muscle. The implants are placed under the muscle or within a precisely created pocket to create an athletic and sculpted upper body profile.

Pectoral implants can:

  • Improve chest projection and muscular definition
  • Correct natural asymmetry
  • Restore shape after injury or congenital underdevelopment
  • Create greater balance between the chest, shoulders and upper body
  • Enhance confidence in both clothing and physique

The aim is not to create an exaggerated or artificial result but to produce subtle, masculine enhancement that aligns with your natural frame.

The Pectoral Implant Procedure

Pectoral implant surgery at 101 Harley Street is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes 1 to 2 hours. The procedure is carried out as a day case, meaning you go home the same day.

Your surgeon will begin by marking the chest anatomy and confirming implant position and size with you ahead of surgery. A small incision is made within the armpit (axilla), through which the implant is placed into a precisely created pocket beneath the pectoralis major muscle. This submuscular placement ensures the implant sits securely behind the muscle, moves naturally with the chest, and produces a result that closely resembles naturally developed muscle definition.

Both sides can be treated in a single procedure. Where asymmetry is being corrected, different implant sizes or projections may be used on each side to achieve a balanced result. The incisions are closed with fine sutures, leaving no visible scarring on the chest surface.

Poland Syndrome and Reconstructive Cases

Pectoral implants are one of the most effective solutions for patients with Poland syndrome, a congenital condition in which the pectoralis major muscle on one side of the chest is absent or underdeveloped. For these patients, a unilateral implant can restore symmetry and significantly improve the appearance and proportion of the chest. Reconstructive cases are approached with the same standard of care and surgical planning as aesthetic procedures at 101 Harley Street.

  • Have lost pectoral volume due to injury or neurological conditions
  • Seek enhanced chest definition with long lasting results
  • Desire improved proportionality between the chest, shoulders and upper body
  • Prefer a structural solution rather than reliance on fillers or short term methods

Why Do People Choose Pectoral Implants?

The chest plays a central role in the appearance of the upper body. Defined pectoral muscles create a balanced, athletic silhouette and improve confidence in fitted clothing, swimwear and during physical activity.

Common reasons for choosing pectoral implants include:

Aesthetic Enhancement

  • To increase the volume and contour of the chest
  • To create a more defined and sculpted appearance
  • To achieve a chest shape that exercise alone cannot provide

Correction of Asymmetry

Some individuals experience marked differences in the size or shape of the left and right chest. Pectoral implants offer a predictable way to restore symmetry and proportion.

Reconstruction

Implants can restore natural contour for individuals affected by muscle loss, trauma or conditions such as Poland syndrome, where one side of the chest does not fully develop.

Pectoral implant surgery is highly customisable, with implant shapes and sizes selected to complement your natural build.

Pectoral Implant Options

Pectoral implants differ in shape, projection and rigidity. Your surgeon will select an implant based on your desired result and your natural anatomy.

Pectoral Implant Options

Standard Anatomically Shaped Implants

Customised Implant Sizing

Unilateral or Bilateral Placement

Your surgeon will guide you through these options during consultation.

Pectoral Implant Recovery Timeline

Days 1 to 3 — Go home the same day. The chest will feel tight and movement of the arms is restricted. Rest is important during this period. Swelling and discomfort are normal and managed with prescribed pain medication.

Days 4 to 7 — Arm movement improves gradually. Avoid lifting, reaching overhead, or any activity that engages the chest or shoulder muscles. Most patients are mobile and comfortable at rest by the end of the first week.

Week 1 to 2 — Most patients return to desk-based work after around one week, provided their role does not require physical exertion or use of the upper body. Driving should be avoided until full arm mobility and reaction speed have returned.

Weeks 2 to 4 — Light daily activities resume progressively. Upper body exercise, heavy lifting, and activities engaging the pectoral muscles should still be avoided.

Weeks 4 to 6 — Light cardio and lower body exercise can resume. The chest continues to soften and the implants settle into position as swelling resolves.

6 to 12 Weeks — Full recovery is typically reached at 6 to 12 weeks, with most patients returning to all activities including upper body exercise. Final chest definition continues to refine as the implants fully settle.

Your Journey With 101
What are pectoral implants and what can they correct?

Pectoral implants are firm silicone devices shaped to replicate the natural definition of the pectoralis major muscle. Placed beneath the muscle through a discreet incision in the armpit, they enhance the projection, contour, and symmetry of the male chest. At 101 Harley Street, they can improve chest definition for patients who cannot achieve their desired shape through exercise, correct natural asymmetry between the left and right side, restore chest contour following injury or muscle loss, and address congenital conditions such as Poland syndrome. Each procedure is planned individually to complement the patient’s natural build and upper body proportions.

Will pectoral implants look and feel natural?

Pectoral implants are placed beneath the pectoralis major muscle, which means they move naturally with the chest and sit behind a layer of natural muscle tissue. The implants are firmer than breast implants and designed to replicate the feel of developed muscle. In most patients the result looks and feels natural in the context of the chest and upper body, without appearing artificial or over-augmented. Implant size and shape are selected to suit each patient’s frame and goals, with the aim of producing enhancement that looks proportionate rather than exaggerated.

Are pectoral implants permanent?

Yes. Pectoral implants are designed to be long-lasting and do not require routine replacement. The silicone does not degrade over time and the result remains stable in the absence of complications or a personal decision to change the implants. If removal or exchange is desired at a later date, this is achievable through a further surgical procedure. Your surgeon at 101 Harley Street will discuss longevity and relevant considerations at consultation.

How long is recovery after pectoral implant surgery?

Most patients take around one week off work following pectoral implant surgery at 101 Harley Street, provided their role does not involve physical exertion. Arm movement and chest engagement are restricted during the first two weeks as the muscle heals around the implant. Most patients return to normal light activities at 2 to 4 weeks and to all activities including upper body exercise at 6 to 12 weeks. The chest continues to soften and refine as swelling resolves and the implants fully settle.

Will pectoral implant surgery leave visible scars?

The incisions used in pectoral implant surgery are placed within the natural crease of the armpit, meaning there is no visible scarring on the chest surface. The axillary incision heals discreetly and is well concealed within the natural contours of the underarm. In most patients the scar becomes very difficult to detect within several months of surgery. Your surgeon will discuss incision placement and what to expect at each stage of healing at your pre-operative consultation.

Who is not suitable for pectoral implants?

Individuals unable to undergo general anaesthetic or those with certain medical conditions may not be suitable. Suitability is confirmed during consultation.

Are pectoral implants permanent?

Pectoral implants provide long lasting results. They are designed to remain in place and maintain chest contour for many years.

Will pectoral implants affect exercise or strength?

After full recovery, most patients return to regular exercise, including chest workouts. Your consultant will advise on safe progression.

Do pectoral implants look natural?

Yes. When placed correctly under the muscle, pectoral implants create a natural, defined contour that resembles muscular development.

Can pectoral implants correct asymmetry?

Yes. Pectoral implants are commonly used to correct congenital or acquired asymmetry, restoring balance across the chest.

What is the recovery time after pectoral implant surgery?

Most patients return to work within one week and resume full physical activity after six to twelve weeks.

Will pectoral implants move or shift?

Implant shifting is uncommon when proper placement and aftercare are followed. Your surgeon will ensure secure pocket creation to prevent displacement.
