What is a Alar Base Reduction?

Alar base reduction is a focused nasal reshaping procedure that narrows the width of the nostrils by removing a small amount of tissue at the base of the nose. This creates a more refined nasal contour and improves overall facial balance without changing the fundamental structure of the nose.

At 101 Harley Street, our approach is centred on achieving natural-looking refinement that respects each patient’s unique facial characteristics.

I recently had surgery at 101 Harley Street and was impressed by the level of care and professionalism displayed by the entire team. I was greeted with friendly staff which immediately made me feel comforted, and this genuine care continued throughout the entire journey. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone seeking quality medical care.

Doctor Dan Wright is not only one of the kindest and nicest human beings you could ever meet he’s one of the most professional. At every stage of my procedure I felt reassured and in very safe hands. I would not normally post a review of anything that isn’t a restaurant or a barber but I felt compelled to here because my experience was so wonderful. Fantastic stuff. Brilliant.

Alar Base Reduction Recovery Timeline

Recovery from alar base reduction at 101 Harley Street is typically straightforward, with most patients returning to normal life within one to two weeks. The timeline below is a general guide — your surgeon will provide a personalised plan at consultation.

Days 1–3 — Go home the same day. Expect mild swelling, tenderness, and some bruising around the base of the nose. Keep your head elevated, avoid blowing your nose, and take prescribed pain medication as directed. Rest is important during this early period.

Days 4–7 — Swelling begins to reduce and any initial discomfort settles. Small sutures are typically removed at around 5 to 7 days. You will attend an early review appointment with your clinical team, who will assess your healing progress.

Weeks 1–2 — Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and light daily activities within 5 to 7 days. By the end of week two, the majority of visible swelling and bruising has resolved. You should continue to avoid strenuous exercise and anything that risks impact to the nose.

Weeks 2–6 — Normal day-to-day activities, including light exercise, can resume progressively. The nasal base continues to settle and refine. Early improvement in the shape and width of the nostrils is visible at this stage, though some residual swelling may remain.

3–6 Months — Full recovery is reached at 6 to 8 weeks, with final results visible between 3 and 6 months as all residual swelling resolves and the tissues fully settle into their refined position.

Alar Base Reduction FAQs

It is common to have questions about a surgical procedure. Some key questions here that we receive from patients considering  a Alar Base Reduction.

If you are looking for more general information about what happens from your first consultation to aftercare visit our Your Journey page to understand how we guide each patient through the consultation, surgery, and recovery process within our Harley Street surgical centre.

What is alar base reduction and what does it correct?

Alarplasty is a focused surgical procedure that narrows wide, flared, or asymmetrical nostrils by removing a small amount of tissue at the nasal base. Unlike full rhinoplasty, it doesn’t alter the bridge or overall structure — just refines proportion and balance.

Is alar base reduction the same as rhinoplasty?

No. Alarplasty targets nostril width and shape only, while rhinoplasty addresses broader concerns like the bridge, tip, and overall structure. Both can be combined, but for isolated nostril concerns, alarplasty alone is often the more appropriate approach.

How long does alar base reduction take and will I need a general anaesthetic?

Alarplasty typically takes 45–60 minutes and is performed as a day case, so you go home the same day. It can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on your circumstances and preferences.

Will alar base reduction leave visible scars?

Incisions are placed in the natural crease at the nostril base, keeping scars discreet and well concealed. In most patients, scars become very difficult to detect within several months as healing progresses.

How much does alar base reduction cost in the UK?

Alar base reduction is priced on a case-by-case basis at 101 Harley Street, as the approach varies between patients. Your confirmed cost, provided after consultation, covers your pre-operative assessment, anaesthetic review, the procedure, and all follow-up care. Financing options are available.

Can alar base reduction be performed alone?

Yes. It can be carried out as a standalone procedure or combined with rhinoplasty for more comprehensive nasal reshaping.

Does the procedure change the shape of the whole nose?

Alar base reduction specifically addresses nostril width. It does not alter the bridge or tip unless combined with rhinoplasty.

Is the recovery painful?

Most patients experience mild discomfort or tightness, which is easily managed with simple pain relief.

When will I see the final result?

You will see improvements within 1–2 weeks, with final refinement visible at 3–6 months.

How long do results last?

Results are long-lasting and typically permanent, as tissue adjustments do not revert once healed.
