Otoplasty cost and recovery explained

  • Face

Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning or pinnaplasty, is a surgical procedure that reshapes or repositions the ears so they sit in better balance with the face. It offers a permanent solution for prominent or asymmetrical ears and is suitable for both children and adults. If you’re considering otoplasty, understanding the costs, recovery and expected results can help you decide whether it’s the right option for you.

At 101 Harley Street, otoplasty is approached with careful assessment and realistic planning, whether for an adult or a child. Understanding the price, the recovery timeline and who the procedure suits helps you weigh the decision properly before booking.

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as pinnaplasty or ear pinning, is surgery to reshape, reposition or resize the ears so they sit in better balance with the face. Most commonly it corrects prominent ears that stand away from the head, but it can also address folded, shell or asymmetrical ears.

The surgeon works through an incision hidden in the natural crease behind the ear, reshaping or repositioning the cartilage and securing it with fine internal stitches. Otoplasty surgery usually takes one to two hours, is carried out as a day case, and can be performed under local anaesthetic (sometimes with sedation) or general anaesthetic depending on age and preference.

It’s a permanent correction and, for suitable patients, otoplasty is associated with consistently high satisfaction rates.

How much does otoplasty cost in the UK?

Private otoplasty in the UK typically costs somewhere between £2,500 and £6,500, with most standalone ear-pinning cases falling in the £3,000–£4,500 range. Prices in London tend to sit toward the upper end because of surgeon experience, facility standards and demand. Several factors move the figure up or down:

  • One ear or both. Bilateral correction costs more than a single-side adjustment.
  • Anaesthetic type. Local anaesthetic is usually less than general anaesthetic or sedation.
  • Complexity. Straightforward pinning costs less than reshaping folded or asymmetrical cartilage.
  • Combined work. Adding earlobe reduction or earlobe repair in the same operation raises the total but shares one anaesthetic and one recovery.
Procedure Typical UK Cost
One ear £2,500–£3,500
Both ears £3,000–£4,500
More complex correction Up to £6,500+

A published headline “otoplasty price” rarely tells the whole story, so always ask what the quote covers from first consultation to final follow-up. Many clinics include pre-operative assessment, the procedure, dressings and aftercare, while consultations or medication may be charged separately.

Do the NHS still pin ears back?

Yes, but only in limited circumstances. Ear correction is treated as a cosmetic procedure and is not routinely funded by the NHS. Funding may be considered for children whose prominent ears are causing genuine difficulty, and occasionally for adults where there is clear, documented psychological distress and other options have been explored.

Any request begins with a GP assessment, followed by referral to a specialist, and decisions are made case by case. Waiting lists can be long, and many people who want the procedure ultimately choose to have it done privately for shorter waiting times and greater flexibility over timing and surgeon.

What age is best for ear pinning?

There is no single perfect age. Ear pinning is not suitable before about the age of five, because the ear cartilage is still growing and too soft to hold stitches reliably. From around five or six, the ears have usually reached close to adult size, which is why many corrections are carried out in childhood or the early teens – often before or during the years when prominent ears can affect confidence at school.

That said, otoplasty works equally well in adulthood, and for adults age is rarely the deciding factor at all. What matters most is that the patient genuinely wants the change themselves rather than feeling pressured into it. For a fuller comparison of adult versus child candidacy, see the FAQ section on the otoplasty page.

Is otoplasty painful?

For most people, no. Most patients describe otoplasty as more uncomfortable than painful.

The surgery itself is painless because it is done under local or general anaesthetic. Afterwards, patients typically describe tenderness, tightness and mild throbbing rather than severe pain, and this is usually well managed with everyday painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

The dressing or supportive headband can feel snug in the first few days, and the ears may be sensitive to touch while the stitches settle. Discomfort tends to ease noticeably within the first week. Sleeping on your back and avoiding pressure on the ears makes those early nights more comfortable.

Otoplasty recovery time: What to expect

Otoplasty recovery is generally straightforward, though the ears take several weeks to fully settle. A rough timeline looks like this:

What to expect

Recovery stage What to expect

First few days

A supportive dressing is worn. Mild discomfort, swelling and tenderness are normal.

Days 5–10

Dressings are removed and many adults return to desk-based work.

Weeks 2–6

A headband is usually worn at night while healing continues. Avoid contact sports and swimming.

After 6 weeks

Most normal activities can be resumed, although the ears continue to settle over the following months.

Children can often go back to school within one to two weeks, avoiding rough play until cleared. Full otoplasty recovery time - with the ears completely settled into their new position - is usually complete within a few months.

What are the downsides associated with otoplasty?

Like any surgical procedure, otoplasty has potential drawbacks as well as benefits, and understanding both is an important part of making an informed decision.

  • There is a small scar behind each ear, though it sits in the natural crease and fades to become very discreet.
  • Temporary numbness, swelling and bruising are normal.
  • There is a low risk of infection, stitches working loose, or slight asymmetry between the two ears.
  • Occasionally a minor revision is needed to fine-tune the result.

Discussing these points openly at consultation is the best way to decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks for you.
