Types of Facelift Surgery We Offer

Facelift surgery is not a single procedure. The techniques available vary significantly in scope, recovery, and the degree of rejuvenation they achieve. At 101 Harley Street, our surgeons are experienced across all of the following approaches and will recommend the technique most appropriate for your anatomy and goals at consultation.

  • Deep plane facelift — the most comprehensive technique, suited to significant facial ageing
  • Endoscopic facelift — minimally invasive, suited to early to moderate upper and mid-face ageing
  • Micro or mini facelift — a lighter lift with faster recovery, suited to early lower face ageing
  • Ponytail facelift — a natural-results focused technique targeting a lifted, youthful appearance

Each technique is described in detail below.

Ponytail Facelift

The ponytail facelift is a term used to describe a facelift approach focused on achieving a naturally lifted, smooth result that looks elegant from all angles, including with the hair pulled back. The name reflects the goal of the result rather than a single distinct surgical technique.

The principles behind a ponytail facelift, discreet incision placement, natural tissue repositioning without visible tension, and a result that preserves the patient’s individual facial character, are the same principles that guide all facelift surgery at 101 Harley Street. Modern facelift techniques have moved well beyond the over-tightened, swept-back results of earlier approaches.

For patients who are specifically looking for a natural-looking lift with no tell-tale signs of surgery, this is best achieved by discussing your goals clearly at consultation so your surgeon can recommend the technique and approach most likely to produce the result you have in mind. At 101 Harley Street, natural results are the goal of every facelift we perform, regardless of the technique used.

Facelift Surgery FAQs

Do facelifts leave visible scars?

Facelift incisions are placed discreetly within the hairline and around the natural contours of the ear. In the majority of patients, scarring becomes very difficult to detect within several months of surgery as healing progresses. Modern facelift techniques are designed to minimise visible evidence of surgery, and your surgeon will discuss incision placement in detail at your pre-operative consultation.

What types of facelift does 101 Harley Street offer?

101 Harley Street offers the full range of facelift techniques, including the deep plane facelift, endoscopic facelift, micro or mini facelift, and natural-results focused approaches. Each procedure is performed by consultant plastic or oculoplastic surgeons in our Harley Street day-surgery facility. The most appropriate technique for each patient is assessed and agreed at consultation based on their facial anatomy, degree of ageing, and goals.

What is the difference between a deep plane facelift and a mini facelift?

A deep plane facelift is a comprehensive procedure that works beneath the deeper facial tissue layers to reposition the underlying structures responsible for jowling, significant skin laxity, and mid-face descent. It produces the most comprehensive and longest-lasting results, typically 10 to 15 years or more. A mini facelift addresses the lower face through smaller incisions with a shorter surgery time and faster recovery, and is suited to earlier-stage ageing. The deep plane facelift addresses a wider range of concerns and produces a more transformative result, while the mini facelift is a more proportionate intervention for patients with mild to moderate changes.

How long do facelift results last?

Longevity varies by technique. A deep plane facelift typically lasts 10 to 15 years or more. An endoscopic facelift and micro facelift produce results that last several years. Natural ageing continues after all facelift procedures, but from a more youthful baseline. Factors influencing longevity include skin quality, sun exposure, lifestyle, and genetics. Maintaining a stable weight and protecting the skin from UV exposure are the most practical steps patients can take to preserve their results.

Is facelift surgery safe?

Facelift surgery is a well-established procedure with a strong safety record when performed by an experienced consultant surgeon in an appropriately equipped facility. As with any surgical procedure, risks exist and will be discussed in full at consultation. At 101 Harley Street, procedures are performed by consultant surgeons in a CQC-compliant day-surgery facility, with rigorous pre-operative assessment and dedicated post-operative care to minimise risk and ensure any concerns are identified and managed promptly.

Will I look natural after a facelift?

Yes, provided the right technique is used and the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon. Modern facelift techniques work on the deeper structural tissues of the face rather than simply pulling the skin, producing a result that looks refreshed and rested rather than altered. At 101 Harley Street, natural results are the primary goal of every facelift procedure. Patients should look like a younger version of themselves, not a different person.

Can a facelift be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Facelifts are frequently combined with other procedures at 101 Harley Street. Common combinations include a neck lift, brow lift, blepharoplasty, and fat transfer. Combining procedures means a single anaesthetic and a single recovery period, and often produces a more harmonious overall result than addressing each area separately. Your surgeon will discuss whether a combined approach is appropriate for your goals at consultation.

What is the youngest age to have a facelift?

Most surgeons recommend waiting until the signs of facial ageing are sufficiently established to warrant surgery, which is typically from the early to mid-forties onwards. Having a facelift too early may mean the results do not justify the investment, as the ageing process will continue. A micro facelift or endoscopic facelift is generally more appropriate for patients in their early forties. Your surgeon at 101 Harley Street will give you an honest assessment of whether surgery is appropriate for your degree of facial ageing at consultation.

How long is recovery from facelift surgery?

Recovery varies by technique. A micro facelift involves 5 to 7 days off work and full recovery at 4 to 6 weeks. An endoscopic facelift involves 1 to 2 weeks off work and full recovery at 6 to 8 weeks. A deep plane facelift involves 2 to 3 weeks off work and full recovery at 6 to 12 weeks. Your surgeon will provide a detailed, personalised recovery plan at your pre-operative consultation.

How do I choose the right facelift surgeon in London?

The most important factors when choosing a facelift surgeon are their specific experience with the technique recommended for your anatomy, their track record of natural-looking results, and the standard of the facility where the procedure will be performed. At 101 Harley Street, every facelift is performed by a named consultant surgeon who holds an NHS consultant post or equivalent, is registered with the GMC, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. You will always be seen, assessed, and operated on by the consultant you met at your initial consultation.
