What is an abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty removes excess skin from the lower abdomen and, where needed, repairs weakened or separated abdominal muscles. Unlike procedures that address fat alone, it works on both the skin and muscle wall, making it suited to those managing the effects of significant weight loss, pregnancy, or natural changes in skin elasticity over time.

Who might consider an abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty is a considered, elective decision and not a weight-loss procedure. During your consultation your surgeon will review your medical history, examine the area and discuss your reasons for considering surgery.

  • Loose or excess abdominal skin that has not responded to diet and exercise
  • Separation or weakening of the abdominal muscles, often following pregnancy
  • A stable weight that they are able to maintain
  • Good general health and no untreated conditions that would raise surgical risk
  • Realistic, well-informed expectations discussed openly with their surgeon

Aftercare and recovery

Recovery from an abdominoplasty is gradual and supported throughout by your team at 101 Harley Street. In the first days after surgery it is normal to feel sore and to move carefully; you will be given guidance on rest, wound care and a support garment if one is recommended for you.

Most people are encouraged to begin gentle movement early to support circulation, while avoiding anything that strains the abdomen. Many return to desk-based work within a couple of weeks, though this varies. More strenuous activity and exercise are reintroduced later and only once your surgeon confirms you are ready. Follow-up appointments are part of your care so your progress can be monitored.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

They address different things. Liposuction removes localised pockets of fat to refine the body’s contour. An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and can repair separated abdominal muscles. Because they target different concerns, your surgeon will advise which is appropriate, and whether they are best considered together.

Am I a suitable candidate for an abdominoplasty?

Suitability depends on the amount of loose skin, the condition of your abdominal muscles, your general health and a stable weight. It is not a weight-loss procedure. The only way to know is a personal assessment, where your surgeon examines the area and discusses your goals and medical history with you.

Will I have a scar after a tummy tuck?

Yes. An abdominoplasty involves an incision, usually placed low across the lower abdomen so it can sit beneath underwear or swimwear. A full technique also repositions the navel. Your surgeon will explain where your scars will be and how they are cared for as they mature.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery is gradual. Many people take around two to three weeks off work, with strenuous exercise reintroduced later, often after six to eight weeks. Timelines vary with the technique and the individual. Your surgeon confirms your milestones and you are supported with follow-up appointments throughout.

Can an abdominoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Sometimes. A tummy tuck is occasionally discussed alongside procedures such as liposuction. Whether this is appropriate and safe in a single operation is a clinical judgement made for each patient, balancing surgical time and recovery. It is discussed in full during your consultation and never assumed.

Is an abdominoplasty suitable for men?

Yes, abdominoplasty is requested by both men and women. Men may consider it for loose abdominal skin, often after significant weight loss. As with any patient, suitability is assessed individually by your surgeon, who will recommend the most appropriate approach for your anatomy and goals.

How much does an abdominoplasty cost at 101 Harley Street?

The cost is individual to each patient and depends on the technique, complexity and whether procedures are combined. We provide clear, written pricing after your consultation. To receive a personalised quotation, please book a consultation with one of our surgeons.
